Vermilion River

I got up early to head out to Franklin Lake. It was a cool morning and the fog was hanging over the calm river at the bridge on the 491 Forest Road.

I drove along slowly with my windows down (and the heat on!) so I could listen to the birdsong. There was quite the racket going on!

Calla Lily

Wild Calla Lily

The Wild Calla Lily is blooming in many places along the roadside. This plant is different than the ones sold in flower stores.
Swamp Sparrow

Swamp Sparrow

Lots of Swamp Sparrows and Sedge Wrens are setting up territories in the wetlands that are numerous in this area. The staccato trill of the Swamp Sparrow can be heard, but usually the bird is not easy to find in the tall grass.

The marsh grasses, or in this case the sedges, have just started to grow and this bird hopped up for a brief moment.

Yep, that’s a beauty. And that lovely little Blackburnian warbler isn’t too shabby either. I love that fiery orange shade of theirs!
