Winter Solstice is December 21st

At this time of the year in Crane Lake, it starts getting dark as early as 3:30 depending on cloud cover, with the sun setting at about 4:30. It’s dark in the morning too, not getting light until about 7:30am. Crane Lake sits at a latitude of about 48 degrees.

While December 21st is the shortest day of the year, that day does not have the earliest sunset or the latest sunrise.  See the following article for an interesting look at winter solstice.
