When Woodpeckers are Hairy – June 11, 2006

This morning there was a baby Hairy Woodpecker with its mother at the suet feeder. The mama would gobble up some suet and then hop up the tree to the branch where the baby was sitting begging for food. How neat!
I like to keep my suet out all summer. I use the raw suet you get from the butcher; you have to get the really pure suet, no meat mixed in, for obvious reasons. My birds definitely prefer the real thing over the processed suet cakes you can buy at bird specialty stores. If some starlings come in, usually in the springtime, I will temporarily take the suet down until they leave the area. I didn’t see any starlings this year, but the Grackles are another story.
