Successful Sharpie Attack

Sharp-shinned Hawk

Sharp-shinned Hawk

I was just sitting at my desk working when all of a sudden I saw a Hawk swoop into the backyard. Wow, he got a Blue Jay!

I ran for the camera and quickly got a few shots off.

The shrieking the (what I believe was) young Blue Jay was making was gut-wrenching. The Hawk took off with his heavy load and pretty soon it was quiet.

I’m still shaking!

Usually in the Fall, the Sharpies will come through and harass the Blue Jays, like in this post from 2006: http://visitcranelake.com/blog/?p=67   This is the first time I have seen them successful. This was a young hawk – the eyes are still yellow, an adult’s eyes would be red.
