And then, over at the Vermilion Gorge Hiking Trail, I heard a soft tapping. A Woodpecker was working on a tree some where close by. I got off the trail to get a closer look hoping that it wasn’t just one of our resident Hairys.

And sure enough, there was a Black-backed Woodpecker. One of the very special birds that we have in the Crane Lake area. They are year-round residents and do breed here in northern Minnesota, but it seems like there is an influx of these boreal Woodpeckers here in the late fall.
