Snowshoe Hare

Snowshoe Hare

This rabbit showed up in the backyard yesterday. It’s interesting to note that this rabbit is changing into its winter coat. Soon he will be totally white to match his surroundings which will be snow! Snowshoe Hares are brown in the summertime and white in the winter.

In Minnesota there are 3 species of rabbits: Jack Rabbit, Cottontail Rabbit, and Snowshoe Hare. Up north here in Crane Lake we only have the Snowshoe Hare. Here’s a link to an interesting article that appeared in the MN Volunteer Conservation Magazine a couple years ago: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/young_naturalists/hares_rabbits/index.html
