Snow Buntings have arrived

Snow Bunting

Snow Buntings average arrival date is October 19th.

These birds are in their non-breeding plumage at this time of the year. But you can still recognize them by their flashy  white plumage when they fly. In the spring the males are a bold pattern of black and white, with white being much more predominant. They travel to Alaska and northern Canada in the summer where they breed.
The traditional method of nesting and brooding involved building their nests in rock cracks and crevices. Now they are almost considered pests in Alaska where they have taken on habits similar to House Sparrows and will nest in any available crack and crevice on buildings.
