Quote from John James Audubon

The word stupid is utterly inapplicable to any bird with which I am acquainted…It is only when birds of any species are unacquainted with man, that they manifest that kind of ignorance or innocence which he calls stupidity.

John James Audubon
(1785 – 1851)

The Pine Grosbeak and many of our winter visitants would fall into this category. It could also apply to the Spruce Grouse, whose nickname is Fools Hen, because of their relative tameness or lack of fear when encountering man.
