Pine Grosbeaks moving through

The Pine Grosbeak numbers are starting to increase as they move north back to their breeding grounds.

It’s so sad every year when these beautiful birds leave Crane Lake. Most of the birds have left by March 15th.

This time of year is fun, as the young first year males are starting to get their adult plumage.

Here is a photo of a young male, you can see how there are bright red feathers coming in on his head, he is also getting colorful feathers on his breast. Their color is almost pink. Take note of the color of the rump, it’s changing from the rusty color of a juvenile bird to the bright red of an adult.
