Thursday afternoon I drove by the Osprey nest in the big swamp right by the Nelson Road and the Osprey was back on the nest!
Since I had been wondering what the exact date of return was last year, I remembered where I had written the date in my little black notebook where I write those sorts of things. I hadn’t used my notebook all winter – a bad thing because I am supposed to write notes about things like the above. Anyhow, when I went to look up the date of last year’s arrival of the Osprey, the notebook fell right open to the correct page. Do you believe in Karma? I do, and the notes revealed that the Osprey returned April 11th, 2006. They returned this year on the 12th. But the weather was so different last year. The ice was ready to go out anyday and this year the ice is still 24 inches thick.
Spring is arriving very slowly this year, and there are little signs of it if you look and listen carefully.
In the middle of the night I was lying awake in bed when I heard the hooting of a Great Horned Owl: http://www.owlpages.com/sounds.php?genus=Bubo&species=virginianus The crows had been having a fit the day before about something up the hill and maybe they were upset about this owl. (hey, the latin or scientific name of this bird is pretty cool – they were first discovered in the state of Virginia)
