Finally, finally, finally!!! The Cardinal that spent the winter in Crane Lake has ventured out to my feeders.
I was pretty upset that I hadn’t seen the purported Cardinal that was hanging out in Crane Lake. So I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I saw a bright splash of color out the window and saw the Cardinal. I was estactic!
I called my Mom, who’s wintering in Texas, to give her the big news. She has more experience with Cardinals than I do and she said they LOVE peanuts. I do offer peanuts to the birds and they are a big hit with the Nuthatches and Chickadees. I buy my peanuts at the New London Warehouse in Virginia. They have the best quality feed on the Iron Range. I buy 50 pounds of “feed-grade” peanuts at a time. The peanuts are out of the shell and roasted. I noticed that in the last couple of bags there were some almonds and cashews too. My birds are eating good! Don’t bother buying inferior quality peanuts at the discount stores, the birds will pass them up. And be careful on storage – they need to be kept in a cool, dry location or the peanuts might mold and that would ruin them even for the birds.
I hope he stays around – Cardinals are such beautiful birds. I believe this is the first time a Cardinal has over-wintered in Crane Lake. Now if he’s finds a mate, maybe we’ll get our first breeding record.
