The first Winter Wren of the season has arrived at Crane Lake. This teeny bird is definitely one of my favorites. Their musical little tinkling song reverberates through the forest as they set up their territories in the thick brush. I am surprised I had not heard one prior to today as they are usually one of the very first to arrive back on their breeding grounds. Sometimes they arrive before the snow has melted completely away. I guess there are still some patches of snow in some north facing nooks and crannies.
We are anxiously waiting for the ice to come off Crane Lake, I am predicting this Thursday. It is probably wishful thinking, the ice was thick this year and just last Wednesday there was still 18 – 24 inches of ice on the lake.
