The birds are returning to Crane Lake like crazy this morning! A little sunshine is all it took! It’s been so rainy and cold and dreary that I wondered if winter was ever going to go away. This morning there’s still snow to melt and ice remains on the lake, but things are heating up and the native bird population is starting to get anxious to move on with spring.

This morning I heard the Easter Phoebe singing up a storm and the Wilson’s Snipe was out winnowing and peenting. The Kingfishers were circling around the gravel pit where they nest in the holes in the bank. Song Sparrows were singing their “tea kettle” song and the Killdeer was hollering over by the wet meadow. I bet the Tree Swallows will be swooping around the yard by this afternoon.
