Madder than a wet hen!

Ruffled Ruffed Grouse

"Ruffled" Ruffed Grouse

Mama Grouse was riled up protecting her chicks. A whole family of youngin’s just flew into the woods – the chicks were noticabley smaller than the adult, but they could fly already. Her crest feathers are sticking straight up!

This photo almost looks like it was taken in a tropical forest somewhere with an exotic turkey-type bird. But no, it’s just a Ruffed Grouse in our “boreal rainforest”. Ruffed Grouse numbers are definitely up this year.

  1. We’ve always seen many Ruffed Grouse up at Hasty but this year hardly any. Do you think it could be because of the Wild Turkeys? There is a gang of six of them that actually chase after the builders. I read that turkeys and grouse compete for the same food source but do you know if turkeys will drive them out?

I’ve heard that too. We don’t have any wild Turkeys up here although I’ve heard they can withstand temperatures down to -40. However, deep snow is problem for them because they can’t reach the food that’s under the snow.
