Driving around the Crane Lake area in late Spring, you will see lots of flowering bushes and shrubs in the woods with white flowers. These are June Berry shrubs or they’re also called Serviceberries and Saskatoonberries. Although the berries don’t usually ripen until July here in the northland.
The berries look and taste a lot like blueberries, but they’re seedier. The best way to enjoy the berries is by just eating them right of the shrub – no one really uses them in cooking or pies.
The flowers now are pretty and are a sign of things to come.
