How to ID a Rough-legged Hawk

I was lucky enough to be in Duluth over the weekend at Hawk Ridge where they banded a beautiful Rough-legged Hawk.

Rough-legged Hawks breed up north in Canada, but in the winter they migrate to the northern parts of the US. This Hawk along with the Goshawk are the only Hawks you will see in our area in the winter. As they soar, look for the dark carpal patches (the elbows) on the wing. The dark spots will look like eyes looking down on you.
