Late summer and fall are the best times to go hiking on some of the great trails that we have around Crane Lake. A couple weekends ago, a group of friends went on the Dovre Lake Loop of the Herriman Lake Trails. For a downloadable map go to: http://blog.visitcranelake.com/about/

Rock cairns mark the trail, some of the cairns are “works of art”.

From the Nelson Road trailhead, the Dovre Lake Loop is a 6 mile loop back to the parking lot. For a casual walk around the loop, it will take about 4 hours, some people with long legs can do it in 2 hours.

While we were out there, we ran into a group of kids from the Conservation Corps. They were working maintenance on the trail – Thanks Conservation Corps! The Dovre Lake loop in particular is in spectacular shape. There’s just one beaver dam that you have to walk on top of – it’s kind of tricky – but most times someone has left a walking stick by the dam for ease of negotiating the dam.

Part of the trail is in the BWCAW, so you need to fill out a day use permit. They are available at the trailhead.
