For the non-birders out there, the above abbreviations stand for First Of Year and Little Brown Birds. Let the invasion begin!

Tree Sparrow

Another Spring migrant showed up in the yard yesterday, the American Tree Sparrow, along with some Juncos. The Tree Sparrow only migrates through Minnesota on their way to their breeding grounds in Canada. Sometimes Tree Sparrows will over-winter in MN, usually in the southern portions of the state.

The Tree Sparrow has a central dark spot on it’s plain, unstreaked, gray breast. This field mark along with the bill color are good field marks. Notice that the lower mandible on the Tree Sparrow’s bill is yellow, while the upper mandible is dark.
