Flying Circus

The Hummingbird activity lately has been just crazy!

The Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have started their migration and they are mobbing the Hummingbird feeders. If you look closely, you will notice that most of the adult male Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have already left. Females and juveniles are moving through now. The male juveniles won’t get their ruby throats until next spring, for now they look just like the females.

Except sometimes they can appear to have a bronz colored back, confusing people into thinking they may have seen a Rufous Hummingbird . The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only species that regularly occurs in Minnesota, but rarities do wander through sometimes. Most times these vagrants will show up in the fall during fall migration. Last fall a very special Hummingbird showed up in southern Wisconsin.
