Cone Crop

White Spruce Cones

White Spruce cones. Birds absolutely love the cones from these spruce trees. I think they’re my favorite tree just because of this. Not only does the tree provide a food source but it’s dense branches and needles provide shelter and protection from the elements. Many little birds use these trees. The seeds in the cones are easily accessed for eating unlike the tough cones of other trees.

It looks like it will be an excellent crop of cones this year – unlike last winter when there were hardly any cones at all. It will be good for all the birds that come south to northern Minnesota in the winter.
