Cock fight, northwoods style

Last week I was heading into Cook on Hwy1, when I saw two Ruffed Grouse on the side of the road.

I got out of the car and proceeded to set up my scope and camera. I couldn’t believe they hadn’t taken off yet.

They were oblivious to their surroundings. They were so focused on each other, that as several cars went by they completely ignored them. I just kept getting closer and closer to this pair of Grouse.

I was able to get this incredible video.

I think there may have been a territorial battle going on. Believe me, the traffic on Hwy 1 is pretty minimal, but still these two birds were so focused on each other, that the few cars that did go by, were totally unnoticed by these two crazy birds. They were going to get themselves killed by a car!  I finally had to chase them off the road. They let me get about 3 feet away from them before they flew. I was flailing by arms trying to get their attention. Finally they flew back into the woods where they probably continued their battle.
