A Northern Cardinal is not seen very often in Crane Lake, but yesterday there was a beautiful male hanging around Nelson’s Resort.
Then this morning I got a call from a friend who has a female Cardinal in her backyard. She was calling from Buyck which is about 15 miles south of Crane Lake.
A couple years ago I heard from two seperate people in town that they had a female Cardinal at their feeder, but the bird didn’t stick around. These are the only sightings that I know about – Cardinals are not supposed to occur this far north. The Northern Cardinal’s range has been extending further north for some time now, so maybe we will see more of these sightings.
Minnesota has had a fantastic fall migration – there are rarities showing up all over the place in Minnesota. Check this photo gallery out at the Minnesota Ornithologists Union website: http://moumn.org/cgi-bin/recent.pl
