Blue-headed Vireo

Another FOY (first of year) this morning at the Gorge Hiking Trail is the Blue-headed Vireo, formerly called the Solitary Vireo. The name “Vireo” meaning “greenish or becoming green”, refers to the greenish hue of their plumage. Until recently, the Solitary Vireo was considered a single species, however, it is now recognized as three distinct forms, the Blue-headed, Plumbeous and Cassin’s Vireos. The last two species occur out west.
