White-crowned Sparrow

Where’s the white crown? This is a “1st Winter” White-crowned Sparrow probably┬áthe sub-species Gambelii. These sparrows only briefly visit our area in the spring and fall – they nest way up north on the tundra. The adult bird with their white crowns are quite striking. They’re usually found with migrating flocks of White-throated Sparrows. The White-crowned will never have a white throat so look for that when trying to tell the difference.
