Aquatic Plant

Pickerel Weed

Pickerel Weed

What kind of plant is this? The books say Pickerel Weed,  but is it an noxious, invasive plant? It sure seems that way when you see the way it can “take over” a waterway. For example, the Hunting Shack River that flows along the Echo Trail. The small river is just choked with this plant. The purple flowers are very pretty and the foliage is interesting, and it is considered a native plant. Then why is it just showing up now? I have never seen this plant before this year. And how will the native Wild Rice cope with the competition from this plant…

It’s really kind of pretty; especially here by the road on the Hunting Shack River.
